This category typically requires a single layer of arc-rated PPE. Many companies that require PPE Category 1 opt for PPE Category 2 clothing to cover both categories. The comfort of PPE Category 1 and 2 is comparable, so it often makes more sense to choose PPE Category 2 clothing. Workers in this category need to wear arc-rated long-sleeve shirts and pants or a coverall with a minimum arc rating of 8 cal/cm2.
They also need to wear arc-rated face and head protection, such as an arc flash suit hood or an arc-rated face shield, and a sock hood/balaclava with a minimum arc rating of 8 cal/cm2. Additional items such as arc-rated jackets, rainwear, parkas, and hard hat liners may be needed as well.
PPE Category 3: Minimum Arc Rating 25 cal/cm2
This category requires additional layers of PPE. Workers in this category need to wear arc-rated flash suit jackets and pants or a coverall with a minimum arc rating of 25 cal/cm2. They also need to wear arc-rated flash suit hoods with a minimum arc rating of 25 cal/cm2, and rubber insulating gloves and leather protectors or arc-rated gloves. Additional items such as arc-rated jackets, rainwear, parkas, and hard hat liners may be needed as well.
PPE Category 4: Minimum Arc Rating 40 cal/cm2
This category requires the highest level of protection. Workers in this category need to wear arc-rated flash suit jackets and pants or a coverall with a minimum arc rating of 40 cal/cm2. They also need to wear arc-rated flash suit hoods with a minimum arc rating of 40 cal/cm2, and rubber insulating gloves and leather protectors or arc-rated gloves. Additional items such as arc-rated jackets, rainwear, parkas, and hard hat liners may be needed as well.
